Sales Job Interview Tip: Be Specific – Paint a Picture or Tell a Story

Throughout the interview, if you’ve discovered that ‘lead generation skills’ are important to the interviewer (for example), do not just go on to explain “I have great lead generation skills”.  This will not get you the job.  Tell the interviewer how you’ve gone about generating leads in the past.  Relate a specific story about how this skill has lead to tangible results in your prior role/s.

For example, you might mention a client (by name) that you cold called that ended up coming on board and how you went about approaching that client.  Painting a picture of a specific moment in time is much more powerful than talking about things in theory or in general.  It’s also much more believable for the interviewer.  It gives the interviewer the ability to start picturing you in the role, which is exactly what you are trying to achieve aren’t you?
